Anastasia Brooke Applewhite

Garner, North Carolina
2004 Shrine Bowl Queen

Anastasia Brooke Applewhite is the 10 year old daughter of Derrick and Robin Applewhite.  She lives in Garner, NC and is a fifth grader at Cleveland Elementary School.  She has two sisters, Samantha and Courtney and a brother, Derrick, Jr.

Anastasia began walking at 13 months but walked on her toes on the left side.  Her physician suspected that she would outgrow the toe walking.  At three years old she was seen by an orthopedist, who diagnosed shortness of the left heelcord.  She went through several castings of her leg and wore a brace.  She became involved with the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC in August 2002, where she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  She was evaluated in the Motion Analysis Lab and surgery was recommended.  In February 2003 she had soft tissue surgery including hamstring and tendon lengthening and surgery on the left foot and heel.

Anastasia was placed in a full leg cast for one month and half cast for two weeks.  She received physical therapy for almost a year.

Anastasia is doing wonderful and for the first time will be receiving the Presidential Physical Fitness Award from here school because now she is able to fulfill the physical requirements for the award.  She is taking voice and acting lessons and has received second runner-up in two local pageants.  She is a very loving and caring child and always thinks of others before herself.

The Shriners were an answer to our prayers and we will be forever grateful for what they have done for Anastasia.  God Bless You.
