Ed Hampton of the Shrine Bowl Athletic Directors Staff reported to the SBOC Public Relations Office earlier today that Southern Guilford football player, Scotty Wayne, whom was to be named to play in the 72nd Annual Shrine Bowl Game for the Tar Heels, was killed in an automobile accident on Saturday, October 4th on I-85 in Davidson County.

In a story written by Steve Hanf, Preps Editor of The High Point Enterprise, stated that “Cameron Scott Wayne, a 17-year-old senior, already had verbally committed to play football on a full scholarship at East Carolina University next year.”

"When he accepted that offer to ECU, one of our assistant coaches made a comment that it was one of the best things that had happened to the Southern Guilford football program in a long time," said Storm head coach Darryl Brown. "For this to happen today is one of the worst things to ever happen to the Southern Guilford football program."

Scotty Wayne, a standout running back, defensive player and kick returner also made a name for himself on the track team as well as boasting a grade point average around 3.5.    (Excerpts re-printed with permission)

In a special statement made earlier today, Shrine Bowl Board of Governors Chairman, Billy Benfield, Game Chairman Connie Altman, and Athletic Director Ron Long  said “The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas’ extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Scotty Wayne, his Southern Guilford Storm football team and his many friends.”
