Coach Mike O'Cain
North Carolina State University

Mike O'Cain joined Carolina on Dec. 21, 1999, after a seven-year run as head football coach at NC State University and 14 years overall with the Wolfpack. A highly regarded recruiter and offensive football mind, he serves as UNC's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

After serving from 1986-92 as NC State's quarterbacks coach, O'Cain guided NCSU to a 41-40 record and three bowl appearances as head coach from 1993-99.

In O'Cain's first season as NC State's head coach, he led the Wolfpack to a 7-4 regular-season record and a berth in the Hall of Fame Bowl to face Michigan. He was the only rookie head coach to take his team to a bowl game that season.

In 1994, O'Cain led the Pack to a school-record-tying nine wins, including a 28-24 win over Mississippi State in that season's Peach Bowl. Only Lou Holtz, who served as NC State's head coach from 1972-75, posted more wins in his first two season's than O'Cain's 16, while his 10 ACC wins during that time frame are the best ever for an NCSU coach in his first two seasons.

After back-to-back 3-8 campaigns in Raleigh, O'Cain's 1997 Wolfpack team was 6-5. In a 1998 season that saw NC State upset then-second-ranked Florida State, O'Cain's team posted a 7-5 record and led the ACC in passing yards and total offense, both of which were also school bests. Torry Holt, a consensus All-America pick and now a star with the NFL's St. Louis Rams, led the league and set a new conference career record for receiving yards as a part of that team which closed the season at the Micron PC Bowl.

O'Cain has also enjoyed coaching stints at Clemson (1977, graduate assistant/running backs), The Citadel (1978-80, offensive backfield), Murray State (1981-84, assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach) and East Carolina (1985, assistant head coach).

As a player, O'Cain had an outstanding prep career at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. In his senior season, he led the team to a perfect 13-0 record, the state 4-A title and a No. 12 national ranking. While at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High, O'Cain was named the 4-A South Carolina Back of the Year, all-state and All-America. He was the starting quarterback for the 1971 Shrine Bowl, where he teamed with Robbie Caldwell, UNC's offensive line coach.

O'Cain continued his stellar play at Clemson, where he lettered from 1974-76. He was the team's MVP and co-captain as a senior. O'Cain earned a B.S. in recreation and parks administration from Clemson in 1977.

An Orangeburg, S.C., native, O'Cain is married to the former Nancy Farnum. They have two daughters, Jenny and Lizzi.

Recruiting Areas: Charlotte and Gastonia, N.C., Eastern South Carolina, Western Florida.
