Our most worthwhile humanitarian project has existed for seventy years and has given to the Shriners Hospital for Children Endowment Fund the net proceeds from the six (6) sponsoring Shrine Centers Fund raising efforts, along with the Shrine Bowl Game proceeds, more than sixty-four million, four hundred dollars ($64,400,000.00) Last year’s sixty ninth Shrine Bowl Game presented a check  (for net income raised by the five Shrine Centers) for $1.4 million Dollars.  While this sixty four million, four hundred thousand sounds like a lot of money, it would almost cover operational cost for about forty (40) days or $20.00 per second.  Today we operate twenty-two Shrine Hospitals, eighteen Orthopedics; three specializing in Burns Treatment and one that provides Orthopedics, Burns and Spinal injury care.  During that time our Hospitals have successfully treated over 770,000 children who have been, to varying degrees, rehabilitated.

As history has it the idea of an All Star Game was first dreamed of more than seventy-one years ago in 1936, by a group of Oasis Shriners sitting around the fireplace of the old downtown Red Fez Club in Charlotte, NC.  They were discussing ideas about how they could raise money for the Shrine Hospital in Greenville, SC.  The Shrine “East – West College All Star” game played in San Francisco had been going on for about ten years and was enjoying immense success. .  This group of Shriners suggested that they might do the same using high school players from North & South Carolinas.

The following year 1937, they played the first Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte, NC. That first game was sponsored by the then four Shrine Centers located in North and South Carolina, the game remained in Charlotte, for sixty- four (64) years.   That first game under the general chairmanship of Earnest J. Sifford had net precedes of $2,599.00, which was forwarded to the Greenville Unit of the Shriners Hospitals, Greenville, SC. The game was successful beyond their expectations.  In 2001 Oasis Shrine Center withdrew its membership from the Shrine Bowl Organization and the game was forced to relocate.   The remaining five Shrine Centers voted unanimously to relocate to Rock Hill, South Carolina, where it remains for three years.  In 2004 after considering several options the event was moved to Spartanburg, SC where it remains today.

It is hard to imagine the vast amount of behind the scenes work necessary for our Shrine Bowl production.  The success of this annual project is a tribute to hundreds of both Shrine and non-Shrine workers who annually volunteer thousand of hours.  Without these wonderful people our project would never be possible as we have only one paid employee.  The five Shrine Centers who sponsor this event are; Omar, Mt. Pleasant, SC -  Sudan, New Bern, NC  -  Hejaz, Mauldin, SC -  Jamil, Columbia, SC -  and Amran in Raleigh, NC
