This committee was composed of two
physicians---one each from the competing states.

Athletic trainers listed in the official program for
the 1st time.
Fitz Lutz for North Carolina and Jess
Alderman for South Carolina.
Both were collegiate athletic trainers.
Collegiate level athletic trainers were
used from 1952 through 1979.

High school student assistants were used for
the 1st time.
Danny Poole of West Mecklenburg High
School served as a student athletic trainer for the South
Carolina team.

High school athletic trainers were used for
the 1st time.
Elton Hawley of Olympic High School
worked with the North Carolina team and Scott Douglass of
South Mecklenburg worked with the South
Carolina team. An
athletic training coordinator was used for the first time for this
and subsequent games.
Carroll Lowder, then of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was
selected as the athletic training coordinator.

Elton Hawley became the athletic training
coordinator for the Shrine Bowl.

1988 |

Two adult athletic trainers (one from each state)
were added to the athletic training staff. These
additional
adult athletic trainers would serve for one year, thus
allowing other adult athletic trainers at the high school
level; to participate in the Shrine Bowl.
In the first year, Randy Strickland (Summerville High
School) and
John Blake (Southern Durham High School) worked with our
perennial athletic training staff.

The 1st female athletic trainers were invited
to work the Shrine Bowl game. Gail
McMurry (C.E.
Jordan High School) worked the North Carolina team and
Sheila Curry (Dutch Fork High School) worked
the South Carolina team.

The rosters of each state were expanded to 40
players. |

1998 |
 |
Former student athletic trainers of the Shrine Bowl
were invited back as athletic trainers. Mike
Guerrero (N.C. student trainer in 1981) of Garner High
School worked with the North Carolina team and
Mike Ballard (S.C. student trainer in 1987) of Clover High
School worked the South Carolina team.

A second student athletic trainer (Female) was added
to each state's roster. Stephanie
Perkinson ( East
Wake, NC) and Christa Doane (Rock Hill, SC) were the first
female student athletic trainers.

No NC/SC Shrine Bowl Game in Charlotte's Memorial
Stadium for the first time since 1937. Game
played
instead at District III Stadium in Rock Hill. |

The rosters
of each state were expanded to 48 players |

2003 |

The rosters
of each state were reduced to 44 players at the
request of the SC Football Coaches and South
Carolina League Office in Consideration for the SC
North/South game. The Shrine Bowl returns to Rock
Hill for the third year. Dr. Guy O. Keller retired
from the Medical Committee after nearly 50 years of
service to the Shrine Bowl and its players. Dr.
Greg Pleasants, (a 1986 high school assistant on the
NC squad) serve as the Medical Director beginning in
2004. |

The Shrine
Bowl game is moved to Wofford College, Spartanburg,
SC. Last year for Elton Hawley as Athletic Training
Committee Chair. Elton’s replacement will be Mike
Guerrero of Garner High School. Mike has been with
the Shrine Bowl in the past as both a high school
assistant (1981) and as an invited athletic trainer
(1998). Last year for Scott Douglass of the SC
squad and John Burney of the NC squad. Scott’s
replacement will be Barry Atkinson of Laurens High
School and John’s replacement will be Tracy Hefner
of East Burke High School. Both Barry and Tracy
have worked the Shrine Bowl previously. |

begins his first year as Athletic Training Committee
Chair. Elton Hawley remains on as Athletic Training
Committee Chair-Emeritus. Barry Atkinson serves as
the Athletic Trainer for the South Carolina squad.
Tracy Hefner serves as the Athletic Trainer for the
North Carolina Squad. |

Each state is
allowed an additional athletic trainer; Miles
Kliewer, Apex HS and Mitch Hadinger, Richmond County
HS from NC; and Mack Harvey, Dutch Fork High School,
SC and Hank Mason, Boiling Springs High, SC. Ken
Stack joins the permanent staff as our Physical
Therapist for the week in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Greg
Pleasants, Mike Guerrero, Tracy Hefner, and Barry
Atkinson return for their 3rd year
serving the athletes. |

Dr. Greg Pleasants, Mike Guerrero, Tracy Hefner,
Barry Atkinson, and Ken Stack return to the Shrine
Bowl Game in their respective roles. Elton Hawley
continues his role as an active ATC Chairman
Emeritus. Hank Mason is permanently added to the
annual staff as the local athletic trainer liaison. |
