Waters, a nominee for the 2001 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, currently holds the NFL record for most interceptions in playoff games, including three in one game, and is second in Dallas history in career pickoffs with 50.

Respected for his courage and knowledge by opponents and teammates alike, Waters was selected to the Pro Bowl three times. Additionally, he was named All-Pro three times. A fan favorite, he was twice voted as a Favorite Cowboy.

After retirement, he worked as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports before re-entering the NFL as a coach. In his seven seasons on the sideline with the Denver Broncos, Waters advanced himself to defensive coordinator and his team to the playoffs four times.

In 1996, Waters and his family returned to Dallas, and he returned to the private business sector where he is involved with many community and charitable activities including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I'm Third Foundation of Kanakuk Kamps, Boles Home for Children, CASA and the Cody Waters Memorial Fund.
